Axial symmetry is used extensively throughout the architecture, as easily seen in the above image of the frontal exterior of the building. Garnier incorporated a mixture of styles in his blueprints for the opera house, including Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque – although the style is generally accepted to be that of Beaux-Arts, a Neoclassical style taught at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris an influential art school. The construction was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III as part of the great reconstruction of Paris during the Second Empire of France. Originally called the Salle de Capucines due to its location on the Boulevard de Capucines, the Palias Garnier was built between 1861 to 1875 in the Beaux-Arts Neoclassical architectural style, designed by Charles Garnier, an unconventional choice at the time for such a massive project (Empress Eugenie was reportedly unimpressed upon receiving news of his appointment, as he own favourite candidate Viollet-le-Duc had been overlooked for the position). The Palais Garnier, or the Opera de Paris, stands the test of time as one of the most opulent and beautiful buildings of the 19th century – if not all time.

As a former ballet dancer who comes from a family of professional ballet dancers, it was impressive that what is known today as “Classical ballet” arose with the Paris Opera Ballet. The Paris Opera has been the main opera and ballet company in France, which is still in production to this day. Although I do understand the contention, considering Chagall’s modernistic approach as compared to the original ornate and classical interior. Personally, I admired them but it is Marc Chagall, who was an early modernist, and I would not have expected anything different. When the ceiling was unveiled, the frescoes caused controversy and were widely contested. In 1964, the opera’s ceiling was renovated, and Chagall was commissioned with painting 2,400 square feet of frescoes.
